Abstract

Volume 7 of the Journal of the Canadian Society for Coptic Studies is dedicated to Egyptian monasticism. The first five contributions were presented at the Seventh Annual Coptic Studies Symposium “Coptic Heritage: Monasticism—Consistency and Change” held at the University of Toronto on 1 March 2014. These cover different aspects of research in the field of early Egyptian monasticism. The contributors discuss topics related to terminology, monastic ideology, spirituality, magic, and history as represented in monastic literature. As announced in the Editor’s Note of JCSCS 6 (2014), the keynote lecture of the Sixth Symposium hosted by the University of Calgary could not be included in that volume. We are glad that it is found in the present volume as the sixth contribution, which tackles a contemporary subject.
