Abstract

“Place,” is a way of seeing, of knowing and understanding, and of being in the world. Value and meaning are not inherent in any space or place — they must be created, reproduced, and even defended.1 Thus space is what we decide to emphasize and what we mark as important in the construction of a meaningful place, which in turn contributes to individual and collective identity. Different groups of people have different ideas about what is and what is not appropriate. As such, place is what contributes to history in a specific context through the creation and utilization of a physical setting — space. Space, however, is not simply formed and moulded, it also plays an active role in the formation of society and its social groupings. Society produces space and space reproduces society
