Recently Excavated Seal Impressions of the Middle Kingdom from Elephantine

Abstract

Seal impressions at Middle Kingdom sites can be informative on the nature and significance of the administrative activity of their inhabitants. The present article analyzes a corpus of 372 seal impressions from a Middle Kingdom settlement site on Elephantine Island, excavated by the German Archaeological Institute project “Realities of Life.” I will use the typology established by Olga Tufnell and William Ward to classify the decorative and textual contents of the impressions. I will also identify “back types,” which inform what types of containers were sealed. I will be able to compare the Elephantine corpus with those found at contemporary sites for additional context. Finally, I will discuss the significance of a few specific seal impressions which hold noteworthy names and titles. This analysis will serve to clarify the meaning, function, and context of seal impressions found at Elephantine.
