The Genealogy of Mereruka’s Family, Revisited

Abstract

This article traces the genealogy of members of one of the strongest families buried at Giza and Saqqara during the latter part of the Fifth and the beginning of the Sixth Dynasty. It is argued that Kaikherptah and Henutsen of G7721 were the parents of Meruka of G355; while Seshemnofer (II) and Henutsen of G5080 were the parents of Nedjetempet (I) who is buried at Saqqara, and possibly Nedjetempet (II?) of G7766. Meruka was married to Nedjetempet (I), and produced the vizier Mereruka, while Sewef of G8424 married Nedjetempet (II?) and had Nyankhmin of G7766. Both Sewef and his son Nyankhmin were apparently disgraced, and the tomb of the former was left uninscribed. His wife, Nedjetempet (II?) built a tomb for herself and later added in it a false door for her son, Nyankhmin. Perhaps at the same time Sewef’s grandson inscribed the lintel in his grandparents’ tomb. However, the figures, and not the names, of Sewef and Nyankhmin were later erased from their respective monuments. Never- theless, this did not affect the career of Mereruka, who became vizier and son-in-law of Teti.
