The Great Temenos at Naukratis Confirmed

Abstract

The massive enclosure recorded by Flinders Petrie at the site of Naukratis in 1885 has since been the subject of much debate. Doubts over the existence and function of this structure, which Petrie termed the “Great Temenos,” were first raised in 1904 and have been repeated ever since. Early identifications with the Hellenion or as a fort were gradually discarded in favour of an Egyptian temple enclosure. Excavations by the British Museum from 2013 to 2019 successfully rediscovered parts of the wall, confirming its existence and role as a temple enclosure, and determined the date of its foundation in the Twenty-Sixth Dynasty.

ظ ّل السور الضخم الذي س ّجله فليندرز بيتري في موقع نقراطيس عام 5881 موضع جدل كبير منذ اكتشافه. وقد ُثيرت الشكوك حول وجود هذا السور ووظيفته في الموقع، الذي أطلق عليه بيتري اسم «Great Temenos»، لأول مرة عام 40٩1. ومع مرور الوقت، تُم التخلي تُدريج ًيا عن التفسيرات القديمة التي اعتبرت السور هيلينيون أو حص ًنا، لصالح تُفسيره كسور لمعبد مصري. وقد نجحت أعمال الحفائر التي أجراها المتحف البريطاني من 3102 إلى ٩102 في إعادة اكتشاف أجزاءً من السور، مؤكد ًة وجوده ووظيفته كسور لمعبد، كما تُم تُحديد تُاريخ تُأسيسه
