Stela of the Viceroy Usersatet from Wadi el-Hudi (WH 255)

Abstract

This article is a study of a stela (WH 255) discovered in 2016 from Wadi el-Hudi dating to the mid-18th Dy- nasty, dedicated by the viceroy of Nubia, Usersatet. The archaeological context of the stela is presented, along with its transcription, transliteration, translation, and some additional discussion. The stela complements an extensive number of rock inscriptions, stelae, and other inscribed material attributed to Usersatet, and provides an opportunity to revisit the viceroy’s prolific life. The stela, found at Site 4 of Wadi el-Hudi, demonstrates early New Kingdom administrative interest in this mining region, which was otherwise abandoned at that time. The stela is dedicated to Hathor and Satet and contains an offering formula and Usersatet’s titles. After its dedication, someone erased Usersatet’s name and image from WH 255, making it one of his many monuments that suffered damnatio me- moriae. We address the large pattern of this systemic erasure on Usersatet’s monuments and suggest that the erasure of WH 255 occurred during a campaign in the reign of Thutmose IV recorded on the Konosso rock inscription.
